The fastest way to get a free copy of your credit report is to order it online. In 45 seconds you can have access to all 3 credit reports on your computer. From there, just save it to your hard drive and you’re good to go until you need to review it again.
Except there’s only one catch… it is best to download all 3 credit reports because there might be some slight, but important differences.
There are 3 major credit reporting agencies, and each one collects data as best as it can. In some cases you might have what looks to be perfect credit on one report, and another might show late payment, judgments and other things that can destroy your rating. When you go to request a copy of your credit report, you’ll be asked which one you would like to download.
It is more important that you thoroughly review all your files now in case there are major items that you need to dispute, and there’s a good chance that you will find information on those reports that don’t belong there. Studies show that 1 in every 4 people have items on their file that are wrong, and it can be bad enough to cause bad credit when you don’t deserve it.
There are many resources to get a copy of credit report, and you shouldn’t have to pay for it. Just make sure the reports you are accessing are from:
- Experian
- Trans Union
- Equifax
Those are the 3 main bureaus and will provide you with the information that lenders and creditors see. Once you have your reports, review it carefully for errors. Minor misspellings in previous addresses or employers are not worth fixing, but if there are claims that shouldn’t be there, you’ll want to address those.
